Salary and compensation for this position is in accordance with the approved Faculty of Medicine Remuneration Guidelines and consistent with the Health PEI Physician Services Agreement (PSA) remuneration. Final compensation will vary by specialty.

The Faculty of Medicine at the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ (ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½) invites applications for the position of Physician Lead, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). The Physician Lead will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and work in close collaboration with the Senior Advisor of Medical Education, program leadership, faculty, clinical leaders, and community partners. The Physician Lead, PGME provides academic and administrative leadership in the development and establishment of postgraduate medical education at ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½.

The Physician Lead will play a central role in the planning and development of residency training programs aligned with the health workforce needs of Prince Edward Island and national standards for postgraduate medical education. During the initial development phase, the primary focus of the role will be on building the foundations of the PGME program, including supporting the preparation of accreditation documentation through the Canadian Excellence in Residency Accreditation (CanERA) system, developing governance structures and policies, and working with clinical partners to establish high-quality residency training environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration and Governance:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of PGME
  • Guide, develop, and maintain application instruments for the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ PGME Institutional and Program Accreditation applications through the Canadian Excellence in Accreditation (CanERA) system CanAMS, in accordance with accreditation requirements of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, including full site-visit and interim review processes
  • Develop proposals and secure program approval from ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Senate
  • Obtain program level approvals from relevant provincial, regional, and national regulators
  • Engage with faculty, administration, and stakeholders to align with accreditation requirements
  • Establish mechanisms for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of program compliance with accreditation standards
  • Assess budgetary and human resource needs for the PGME Office
  • Leads and contributes to Faculty of Medicine and University governance through active participation in, and where appropriate chairing of, committees and working groups related to postgraduate medical education, as delegated by the Dean
  • Oversee the admissions process of PGME programs, including coordination with the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) to ensure effective recruitment and placement of residents
  • Maintains strong academic and pedagogical standards for post-graduate medical education through policy and procedures developed and implemented within the direction, policies and regulations of the Faculty of Medicine
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative curricula that enhance learning outcomes and align with accreditation standards in PGME
  • Assists residency programs in integrating CanMEDS competencies and into their program objectives, curricula, and competency-based assessment into their evaluations
  • Creates, in partnership with Health PEI, a superior environment for learning and inquiry in postgraduate medical education that promotes a pervasive sense of respect, collegiality, empathy and cooperation
  • Provides support, direction and assistance to residency Program Directors, faculty members and organization units that address the educational needs of residents and clinical fellows, working to improve the members’ skills in teaching and assessing these learners
  • Works with the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Dean of Medicine, the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ PGME office and other staff members to develop and monitor annual budgets and support strategic planning
  • Recommend and support recruitment and appointment of faculty members to leadership and teaching roles within the PGME program
  • Ensure appropriate monitoring of program quality, learner outcomes, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Other duties as determined necessary by the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Dean of Medicine

Liaison & Collaboration

  • As delegated by the Dean, leads and contributes to the Faculty of Medicine through active participation in, and where appropriate, chairing of committees and working groups related to postgraduate medical education
  • Collaborate with the Physician Leads of UGME, Social Accountability, Clinical Faculty Affairs, Research, and other portfolios to ensure integration across the educational continuum
  • Liaison with University governance bodies, relevant academic units, and external organizations (e.g. Health PEI, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, College of Family Physicians of Canada, Canadian Resident Matching Service, etc)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A medical degree with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or equivalent
  • Member in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
  • Membership in the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island (MSPEI)
  • Appointees must maintain an active appointment to the medical staff of Health PEI (HPEI)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in medical education, health systems, community engagement, or related fields. Preference will be given to demonstrated experience and/or training in medical education, leadership, and quality improvement
  • Significant experience in postgraduate medical education roles and leadership
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a track record of engaging with diverse stakeholders effectively
  • Strong understanding of accreditation processes and educational standards in postgraduate medical education with a focus on the CanERA accreditation standards
  • Ability to establish and maintain multi-sectoral relationships (i.e., across universities, hospitals, provincial Ministries and other stakeholders)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity and socially accountable medical education
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
